Install script is pretty much done, just need to consult with the others before modifying pdo.php, so we can manage the changes and their effects on the overall project.

Also started on the install script in php.

Will be talking to Daniel about installation scripts, etc.. to simplify the installation process.

End 0f semester rush has hit, so my time for 321 has slipped lately. Started the rack class, shouldn’t take long. We all seem to work better in group work sessions – seems to help motivation, so this is likely to become more common to keep productivity up and push things forward.

Started working on the logs page, installed the wiki successfully as assigned in the meeting. Decided on Doku wiki, as it seemed the easiest to use, had a few permissions issues so had to chmod everything to 777, but this will be fixed once we get our user accounts sorted on the server. Next stop, the racks class. Finally, coding

This week we’ve been just writing the documentation, Google docs has proved useful for the collaboration and I have drawn a lot of examples from previous projects I’ve looked at and online documentation for open source software I’ve come across when planning and writing my sections of the user documentation.

My plan to create a project plan was scrapped, but I still want to see a requirements brief of some form, just so we have one document which really guides the development of the project. Will be working more closely with the guys to clarify the requirements and we will be relying more heavily on the forum to steer the project from here on.

Also, we had a meeting today, tasks were assigned and some interface prototypes and the project plan has been discussed. I will be assigning tasks for the project plan in the next few days, and a meeting with Daniel Saffioti is planned for next week.

I am pushing for a RUP-derived development model to be used to document/plan the project, but I think it will be a bit ad-hoc at best. I just need to make sure some level of reporting is kept because I see a big risk in the project slipping away from that focus.

Had a bit of a mess around with jQuery, definitely a powerful library although I am concerned about the licencing implications of using it, because jQuery is distributed under the dual MIT/GNU GPL Licence. I will have to get some advice about where that leaves the project in terms of licencing (ie. will we be stuck releasing it under the GNU GPL if we use jQuery etc.)

A bit concerned about the software engineering side of things.. Too long has passed with no real deliverables out there. I spoke to dan about the project plan and when the forum is online I will upload some I’ve been involved with previously. The doco side of this isn’t difficult in the early stages anyway.

Toured the datacentre today. definitley fascinating.. The amount of things (apart from just what is plugged into where, etc.) which we might be able to make the system record, manage, etc. Aircon, power consumption and so on. Some discussion took place regarding the platform to develop the system on, ie. AJAX, .net, jQuery, etc.

Discussed with Daniel and Josh about something called a “Patch and cable management” application. I read a bit into the context of it all and it will be a big earning curve but definitely an interesting project
